Keynote: Cultivating Safety for Humans and Animals in Animal-Assisted Therapy

Merksplas, Belgium

Keynote presentation:

Cultivating Safety for Humans and Animals in Animal-Assisted Therapy

We often talk about the importance of creating a “safe space” for those we work with. But what does this mean, exactly? Safety is more than just the absence of danger; it is a relational and nervous system experience that has a particular felt sense in the body. In this keynote presentation, Sarah Schlote will introduce the concept of safety and attachment security from the standpoint of the polyvagal theory, Somatic Experiencing, and interspecies neurobiology. Interoception, exteroception, and neuroception will be presented as core components of working clinically with humans and other species, especially in a trauma-informed context. Experiential activities will allow attendees to explore their own felt sense and to track state shifts in the nervous system.
